Author: John22
Subject: Player of the Season Vote
Posted: 18 May 2012 at 11:16pm

I have to agree with all the opinions already expressed, but lookig through the squad and their contributions and starting at the back, i think Paddy Kenny has proved himself once again to be a very accomplished goalkeeper and when Cerny came in for those few games he showed his quality. I think Young was playing well in the early part of the season but soon went off the boil after his fantastic goal at Stoke. Gabbidon was a disaster waiting to happen, just not sharp at all, and Ferdinand suffered as a result, although his displays throughout the season were up and down. When Clint hill returned from loan Ferdinand looked more comfortable and i think Hill was one of our most impressive players this season, he put his body on the line so many times to get that block in when it was needed. My verdict is still out on Onouha he seems to take an eternity to make a decision. Taiwo is definitily comfortable at left back but i think we have to find a place for Traore down that wing. As he showed against City and previously against Wolves in the away game, his overlapping speed and treat to the opposition should be utilized more. Adel has been very impressive since his return from the African Nations and looked totally focused as he was last season. Diakite looks like we have found a diamond. Joey Barton played well in patches but makes to many wayward passes and his days may now be numbered. Sean Derry impressed throughout the season with his hard work rate, Sean Wright Philips played his part but is definitely not the player he was a few years ago. Bothroyd is as sharp as a blunt razor and when he missed that header into a wide open goal when we were 1-0 up in the City game at Loftus Road, i knew he had to move on and i think he will. Dj never did get much of run but that miss against Utd at LR must still make him wonder what might have been. Zamora has done the job MH brought him in for to hold up the ball and bring others into play, he was never going to score lots of goals and MH knew this ,in that sense he has done well, and particularly against Arsenal at LR. Macheda never did take off, but i think he will soon, out the door. Cisse, what can be said about Cisse, he is the striker you dream of having, razor sharp, lightning quick and cool and deadly in front of goal, his sendings off can now be forgiven after the goal against Stoke. I may have left out others but for me Jamie Mackie is the player of the season, if every player at Qpr had the spirit, strength and determination that he posseses then we could do anything. This combined with his coolness in front of goal makes him my choice. He has run after lost causes all season when others were only going through the motions and his winning goal against Liverpool was the turning point in our fortunes. Jamie Mackie for me, is the man!

    Author: tom
Subject: Player of the Season Vote
Posted: 17 May 2012 at 1:03pm

Who is our player of the season? That is not an easy question to answer. Individual players hit form at various times during the season. Nobody played consistently well throughout the campaign. So, then next question is, who made the most impression?

Our renaissance started in that dramatic 13 minute spell against Liverpool. It was the first of our daunting last 10 fixtures. Derry scored his first goal in 5 years. Cisse equalised and Mackie stunned everyone with the winner. The result gave us belief that we could beat the better sides.

Over the next 9 matches, many players raised their games. To the forefront were not the high earning, newly signed, established Premiership players, but the guys who worked so hard last season to get us promoted. Adel, Jamie, Shaun and Clint all raised their games against the better sides. Joey stopped tweeting and began focussing on his own game, which resulted in much improved personal performances. Cisse, when he was on the pitch, scored in every game he played in. The collection of individuals finally gelled as a team. We won 5 games in a row at home, beating Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs along the way.

So who made the biggest impression on me? I acknowledge endeavour, a willingness to push yourself beyond your comfort zone in an effort to achieve the team's goal. My nomination goes someone who was simply magnificent in key games against the better sides, patrolling the line in front of the defence, trying to break down attacks before they threatened our goal. Someone who reads the game beautifully, always moving and positioning himself to counter any threat, then laying off the ball to someone who can pose a greater attacking threat. My nomination goes to Shaun Derry.

Edited by tom - 17 May 2012 at 3:13pm

    Author: davedouglas
Subject: Player of the Season Vote
Posted: 17 May 2012 at 10:05am

I'm a little mystified as to how any of our defenders can be player of the year after that season, however I wouldn't have seen a great deal of games, so I will bow to other opinions here. At the risk of being unfair I'm including Paddy Kenny in that analysis even though a goalkeeper often can only perform a certain amount of miracles, if the defence lets him down, ulitimately he'll look like he's making mistakes. What I did see of Clint Hill was watching the Chelsea defeat on a silent TV in a crowded restaurat in Thorpe Park in England and him being roasted by a Chelsea attack on fire. It's difficult to pick out one player after the season we've had, there's many half-seasons there with Adel and Buz coming back into it in the 2nd half and the Iceman had a great start to the season. Cisse and Barton for obvious reasons made real good v evil contributions; the other new 'star signings' really didn't make as much of an impact as anyone would have hoped for, you know Bothroyd, Campbell, Wright-Phillips etc. Zamora arguably did a bit better than those guys, and I have to say I like the look of Diakite. But I'll go for the player who has typified the 2nd half of the season fightback for the R's, the man who came back from bad injury and scored the late goals on a few occasion, and it was so fitting that he scored our final goal of the season at Etihad, against the odds, and didn't he take that goal well too? If I am Mark Hughes for just a moment, and I'm writing down the players I want to keep for next season, Jamie Mackie is top of my list. Doubly fitting that he has just extended his contract too; that's great news this week, and I hope he'll be a Ranger for many seasons to come.
